Sarah Darling – New Artist Showcase

Halley’s Comet is an apt title for the new single from Sarah Darling, an artist set to soar in 2017. But the ballad is not the only song about the heavens on her album, Dream Country. Another track is called Stargazer, while the atmospheric black-and-white video to her smouldering jazz number You Take Me All The Way finds the photogenic newcomer swinging seductively in the crook of a quarter-moon prop, surrounded by spinning stars.

So is the singer a closet astronomer? “I’ve always found comfort in the stars,” she purrs down the phone, in a slow and treacly lower register (well, it is 8am in Nashville). “I grew up in a small farm town out in the middle of nowhere in the Midwest, and one of my fondest memories as a kid is going outside at night, gazing at the stars and dreaming about what I was going to do, which was move to Nashville and pursue this dream.”

As soon as she left high school, Darling made her move to Nashville, where she waited tables and honed her craft at songwriter nights. Her circle included the pre-fame Love And Theft. “I wrote with Josh Osborne before he wrote all his hits for people like Luke Bryan and Kacey Musgraves.”

Darling’s break came when she was spotted at a writers’ night and signed a record deal with Black River Entertainment. She made her chart debut with Home To Me which charted at No. 34, whetting appetites for her new, independently released album.“Home To Me changed my life,” says the artist, whose repertoire mixes sensitive balladry, sunny Nashville pop and the odd rockier track.

“All of a sudden, I was playing big fairs and festivals and hearing my song on the radio. So I’m thankful for that song, for all the fans I’ve met and all the opportunities it gave me.”

Darling is married to an Englishman, so she’s committed to a career on this side of the pond. Many will have seen her on one of the pop-up stages at C2C last year, or supporting
Ward Thomas on their autumn tour. She’s also toured here with Jenn Bostic and will be back for dates this spring.
“I have a real love for the UK,” says Sarah. And we don’t think it’ll be long before the feeling is mutual…
